The Real Insult

English school teacher was arrested and threatened with torture for calling a Teddy Bear “Muhammad” in a Sudanese school. This gentle teacher, appearing “shaken and ashen-faced” was led to Sudanese court today to face charges of insulting Islam and using hate speech. The school was shut “to avoid protests like those that greeted the publication of notorious cartoons of the Muslim prophet in a Danish newspaper last year.” Lynch mobs demand that “Mrs. Gibbons 'must die' and urged Muslims to hold street protests after prayers tomorrow.”

Islam is insulting to reason and decency. When will Muslims apologize?

Update: Sudanese judge jails teacher for 15 days as her school praises the decision. British Foreign Secretary continues to grovel “it’s a misunderstanding” while an embarrassed Muslim Council of Britain expresses disapproval of any punishment.

They won't. They think that they are fulfilling the will of Allah.

I fear for Ms. Gibbons in all this. Having taught in elementary school for some 18 years, I know the she meant no insult. She was interacting with the children and enjoying that interaction!

From today's WaPo:

But the Sudanese government's position appeared to toughen Wednesday with a statement from the nation's top Muslim clerics calling for Gibbons to be punished according to the nation's sharia, or Islamic, law.

"What has happened was not haphazard or carried out of ignorance, but rather a calculated action and another ring in the circles of plotting against Islam," the Sudanese Assembly of the Ulemas said, according to news reports.

"It is part of the campaign of the so-called war against terrorism and the intense media campaign against Islam," the statement said.

"It is an explosive issue," Timothy Garton Ash, an Oxford University professor and specialist in foreign affairs, said of the teacher's situation. "My hunch is that it will still be resolved as an individual case, but many will see it as symptomatic of much larger problems."

I'll find out more when I get home from work this afternoon.

How ironic. From those quotes we see that the Muslim leaders realize there is a war but the British in denial. Of course, one wonders about someone who teaches in the Sudan. Clearly she weren’t anti-Islam. But being a dhimmi isn’t easy even when one tries. I’m sure the groveling will begin starting with the British government. That, of course, is what they want. Break down a person's (and nation's) pride. It inculcates the dhimmi disposition.

Good article at the BBC contains some good links to Sudanese bloggers but I'm sure you will persist in thinking that a muslim is a muslim is a muslim. You should apologize for that.

I’m well aware that the colonial Muslims are embarrassed by the devout revivalists.

Sociologically, the demographic group that uses the nominal label, Muslim, is heterogeneous. It’s Islam that is well-defined by the example and words of Mohammad. Like Communism, it is an illiberal political ideology. And just as the Chinese still call themselves what they are not, many Muslims do the same.

One should really stop calling oneself a Commie or a Muslims if you don’t mean it. You don’t call yourself a Commie anymore, right Ducky?

Well Jason, the fact that you would consider me a communist or imply that I was ever a communist simply indicates that you have some strange definitions.

You're far right but I don't consider you a Nazi. Although as Beamish demonstrates, the right even considers the Nazis leftists.

You are so thoroughly threatened and frightened by anything in the least at variance from laissez-faire theory that the lack of granularity makes discussion difficult.

Yes Jason, I was a real card carrying Communist. Do you realize how silly that statement is?

When will Muslims apologize?

When their atrocious behavior is placed beyond the pale. If they are legitimized, rewarded and enabled by their victims, why would they apologize? It is only when an aggressor pays heavily for his misdeeds that he will consider any lessening.

British school teacher needs to get the hell out of the country. There's no reason in a lynch mob.

Thanks for your great comments over at my blog, Jason!

If you say you aren’t now and have never been a Communist, I’ll take your word for it, Ducky. You do have a soft spot for Marx, as I remember or was that liberation theology? In any case, it was a thoughtless remark unworthy of the Christmas spirit, on my part. Let’s hope that our dear Miss Gibbon makes it home for the holiday. Shall we?

I think that is slowly happening. Polls show a change in attitude. Privately people aren’t afraid to express their outrage. That’s why we finally see the national Muslim group in the UK condemn this embarrassing event. They’re better than the UK government!

We should keep the pressure on by speaking out and exposing this evil.

Jason, I have always said that Marx's critique of capitalism has value and should be read. Excellent economists such as Schumpeter agree with me.

What Marx did was point out structural problems that are blithely ignored by Rand which is why I reject her as a reactionary.

Jason, the UK government was in a position where they had to first be concerned with the woman's safety.

Any fallout will come when she's back in England.

Nonsense! Groveling only emboldens them. It was the outrage in the UK press over the potential lashing that helped limit her sentence. The whole notion of lashing is barbaric and to do so over a Teddy Bear is even more repulsive.

The UK government leaders were enablers who hurt her chances for a complete release. Nothing emboldens these savages more than the smell of fear and moral uncertainly.

Ducky,

The Nazis claimed to be for "the working class" and for "the German people" (and even went so far as to define "people" to specifically exclude quite a few) as they steadily rounded up and killed their opponents and critics to create a police state under a centrally planned economy.

Why would anybody think the Nazis were anything but leftists?

News update just now on FNC: Thousands thronging in the streets of Khartoum and demanding the execution of the teacher. Thousands! And wielding knives and swords.

Sheesh! Talk about a negative pr-campaign!

So your position is to risk her life and the lives of any other westerners in country to prove you have a big unit?

That's insane, Jason.

These mooslams are idiots, it was the freekin' kids that named the freekin' teddy bear Mohamad, after all.
This woman NEVER said or did anything against this cult.
Just another reason to drive this cult out of existance.

Gimme a ballpark figure, Ducky. How many leftists need to be threatened with beating, bombings, or beheadings before you twits stop imagining yourselves to be rational?
