Dhimmitude at NYU
New York University is putting pressure on a student group that intends to display the Danish Cartoons at a debate on free speech. Amit Ghate, of Thurch, urges us to send NYU e-mails of protest. Let’s do it. Ghate has several other updates to the story.
If I remember correctly, the talk/discussion/debate is in the old student center building right next door to the Islamic studies building … right in the heart of Greenwich Village. From bohemians to Burqas in one generation! The event is tonight at 7pm ... for those who can't get in there should be lively demonstrations outside. After all, it's on Washington Square Park.

I personally don't like the way this stuff is never ending gas on the fire. I'm for free speech, but we've already got the noose around our necks with this Islamic PC crap.
The noose was handed to us by President Bush, post 9/11 and the people that want to constantly stir up the hornets nest better start dealing with the reality that this stuff isn't going to help.
The rioting in France last year, and the rioting from the cartoons, already changed American attitudes towards Islam.
We need a real war against fundamentalist Islam.
Jason,

That figures! Who funds that center? Saudi?

If it gets bystanders to start doing some research, "this stuff" will do some good. The cartoon wars did a lot to get people curious as to what Islam stands for. And the plight of Rahman--not a stirring of the pot at all, but rather Islam in its orthodoxy--has contributed too.
There will no real war against fundamentalist Islam until people start recognizing the tenets of Islam. And CAIR, MAS, and some other "Muslim civil rights organization" are propagandizing like crazy. People need to see through that pr blindfolding.
I agree with AOW. These stories do wake-up people.
I remember the Islamic studies building going up in the late 60s or early 70s. It was funded by donations from some Islamic country but I don’t remember which one. I do remember the story of one graduate student in Arab and Islamic studies who lost his student stipend when they found out he was a Zionist (this was in the 80s.)

I would take the word 'fundamentalist' out of that statement. All of Islam is 'fundamentalist'. Many a Muslim has told me that there is no such thing as fundamentalist Islam. There is only Islam.
I was stationed on Governors Island in the early 1980s. Back then, Washington Park was good for one thing and one thing only. You could get just about any type of drug you wanted. Seeing that I was in the Coast Guard, this wasn't much of a reason to go there. Now though, they have completely cleaned up the park and it's safe to bring your children if you want. I know this wasn't exactly on subject but Rudy Giuliani made such a difference to New York City.
Jason -- could you post a report on what happens(ed)?
I did my Ph.D. at NYU, and will happily raise hell if there was any official censorship.
